The most commonly used sizes are 24 inches, 36 inches, 48 inches, 60 inches, and 72 inches in diameter. Users started to call the pipe as 2inch, 4inch, 6inch pipe and so on. The standard sizes for reinforced concrete elliptical culvert pipes range from 18 inches to 144 inches in diameter, with lengths of 8 feet or 12 feet. For more information about how to measure diameter see our Measuring Fastener Diameter page. Inches are really popular in the USA but, beyond that, mostly used SI units. Nominal thread diameter is measured on the outside of the threads per ASME B18.6.3. The formula to calculate the diameter is: Diameter Circumference / or Diameter (4 Area / ). The second chart below is a US fraction to metric mm for the more common sizes up to 4". An IPS 6' pipe is one whose inside diameter is approximately 6 inches. You can multiply by 25.4 of inches value when you convert that to mm. That is often found when trying to match a screw size using Digital Calipers (Inch Decimal to Screw Size) or drill a hole (Screw size to Nearest Fraction) for your project. It is very helpful to know the decimal equivalent for a US screw size you have. ![]()
